Badaling Great Wall - the favorite section of travelers
Badaling Great Wall is the most famous section. Most travelers visit this section when they travel Beijing. Partly because it is well maintained, easy for travelers to walk along it.
Badaling Great Wall is located in Yanqing Country, 60 kilometers to the northwest of downtown Beijing. It is a pass of Ming Great Wall, an important part of the great ancient military defense project of China. It is the outpost of the Juyongguan Pass. Badaling Great Wall was built in 1505 of Ming Dynasty. It was called "Yugan Barrier" as one of the eight views of Juyongguan Great wall at that time. It was the first section opened to the tourists. Built along the ridges of mountains, the wall is like a strong dragon winding its way. It has an average altitude of over 1,000 meters. The highest point is Beibalou, about 1015 meters above sea level.
History of Badaling Great Wall
According to the Historical Records and cultural relics census, the great wall was constructed at Badaling area during the Warring States Period. The remnants walls and piers can still be found now. Their directions are roughly the same with the Ming Great Wall. The Northern Wei Dynasty of 1,500 years ago had built the Great Wall at badaling area. Badaling Great Wall today was built 1505 of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It lasts over 80 years and the total length reached up to over 650km. It was restored in 1953 and opened to tourists in 1958. In 1961, the state council determined the wall as the national key cultural relics. In 1988, it was enlisted in the World Cultural Heritage Directory by UNESCO. In 2007, it was listed among the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The parapets built on the inner side is about one meter high. The battlements on the outer side are about two meters high with embrasures for shooting through. The wall here is high and solid with huge stone slabs and filled with hardened earth and rocks. The stone slab is three meters long and weighs more than 1,000 kilograms apiece.

Badaling Great Wall is located in the northern edge of north China plain. Main Attractions of Badaling Great Wall
The pass of Badaling Great Wall, narrow on east and wide on west, was built in 1505 of Ming Dynasty. It has two gates, east gate and west gate, both are brick structures. The piers of the Pass are high and thick, built with 10 layers of lath-shaped granites at the bottom and big bricks at the supper part. The west wall is 20 meters wide, 17 meters thick and 7.8 meters high. There is a platform on the top, with two passages connecting the wall of the pass and crenels all around. Five ancient cannons are displayed at the entrance to the Pass. They were built in the Ming Dynasty and used to guard the Great Wall.
Five ancient cannons are displayed at the entrance to the Pass of the Badaling Great Wall. They are one of the advanced weapons of the Ancient time. The biggest cannon, built in 1638, is 2.85 meters long and 105mm in the caliber. The other four smaller cannons, known as “cattle leg cannons”, were unearthed with hundreds of cannon balls in 1957. They were all built in the Ming Dynasty.
The walls of the Badaling Great Wall are 6-9 meters high, flat trapezoid, 6.5-7.5 meters wide at the bottom part and 4.5-5.8 meters at the top.
The top of the most walls are wide to accommodate to five horses or 10 people in a row for fighting demands. The outer side of the wall is high and the inner side is low.
There are 43 Watchtowers on the Badaling Great Wall. They are similar in shape, but with individual features. Some Watchtowers have two layers, upper layers were buit with forts and shotting holes and the ower layers were used to lodge for solider and hold supplies. The distance of the Watchtowers is determined according to the mountain form. 16 towers have been restored.
Beacon Fire Tower
Built at the top of mountains beyond the Great Wall, Beacon Fire Towers is used to communicated in the ancient time. Beacon Fire Towers are older than Great Wall. When the soliders found enemies, they would burn smokes in the daytime and light a fire in the night. The other soliders would know the amount of enemies according to the smoke or fire. There is a Beacon Fire Tower at each the east and west mountain beyond the Great Wall.
