Chongqing
The "Mountain City" of Chongqing clings to steep cliffs at the confluence of the Yangtze and a major tributary, the Jialing River. It is a modern city, with an ancient history spanning more than 3,000 years. It encompasses within its borders, a great wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests and abundant flora and fauna.
Dazu Stone Sculptures, Chongqing
In Dazu county of Chongqing city, reputed as Land of Stone Sculptures, there are more than 50,000 stone sculptures scattered in 40 places. Baodingshan (Treasure Peak Mountain) is 15 km to the Northeast of the city, first sculpted in South Song Dynasty (1179-1249). Centered at Dafowan (Grand Buddha Bay), nearly 10,000 Buddha statues are displayed along a 400 long U shape hill ridge. The statues sculptured in the Song Dynasty are the best preserved and most well-known for their characteristics, tastes and interesting plots.
Fengdu Ghost City
Town of Fengdu, said to be the abode of devils. The town is thronged with more tourists who come to visit temples and shrines dedicated to the gods of the underworld. Landmarks here bore horrific names - Last Glance at Home Tower, Nothing-to-be-done Bridge and Ghost Torturing Pass - the three check-ups on dead ghosts who wanted to enter the nether world.
Jingzhou City
Previously the famous city of Jiangling, in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC), the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Chu. Its ancient walled city was originally built during the Three Kingdoms Period. Many artifacts have been excavated from many tombs in the city.
Little Three Gorges
Little Three Gorges, lying on Madu River, a famous scenic spot in the Wuxia Gorge, is the combined name of Changtan Gorge, Qinwang Gorge and Sancheng Gorge. Its scenery is gorgeous and charming.
Shennong Brook
Shennong Brook, a tributary of the Yangtze River, 60Km long, rises in the southern part of Shennongjia Natural Reserve. It joins the Yangtze at Xirangkou in Hubei's Badong County. With crystal clear steam flows swiftly from north to south through deep gorges, a sampan tour will allow you to experience a speedy adventure along this newly opened unspoiled river.
Shibaozhai
Shibaozhai represents the first gem of Chinese architecture to be encountered on the downstream journey. The whole building, composed of a gate, gate tower, and an ancient Buddhist temple on the top, guards the only path up the mountain. A distance view of a protruding 220-meter hill resembles a jade seal.
Three Gorges
Coursing over a distance of 6,380 kilometers, the mighty Yangtze is the longest river in China and the third longest in the world after the Amazon in South America and the Nile in Africa. It is also a cradle of ancient Chinese civilization. The most impressive section of the river is the three Yangtze River gorges: the Qutang Gorge, Wuxia Gorge and Xiling Gorge, collectively known as the Sanxia, or Three Gorges. They differ from each other in sceneries: Qutang Gorge is straight and craggy; Wu Gorge, deep, serene and exquisite; while Xiling Gorge perilous for its shoals and rapid currents.
Three Gorges Dam Project
If completed, the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze will be the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. It would stretch nearly a mile across and tower 575 feet above the worlds third longest river. The dam will increase the water level hundreds of meters while displacing 1.4 million Chinese, including complete cities, temples, tombs and a landscape that is irreplaceable.
White Emperor City
Located at the entrance of the Qutang Gorge on the north bank of the river, White Emperor City is not a real city, but a mini city with some temples and gates on top of Baidi Hill in Fengjie County. It is the starting point of Three Gorges and the reason the place is most famous for. Baidi city is also known as City of Poems. In ancient times, attracted by its fame, many scholars and poets visited here and left lots of literal relics.
Wuhan
Wuhan is the largest city in Central China, with a population of 7.3 million and an area of 8,467 square kilometers. It's located in a flat and low-lying land of an alluvial plain, and crisscross with rivers and streams along with numerous lakes and ports. Wuhan is at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Hanshui River.
Wushan
Wushan, one of the original places of primitive civilization, has existed since the latter part of the Shang Dynasty (c.1600 - 1027 BC). It is situated on the north bank of the Yangtze and embraced by lovely mountain peaks. where flourishes the tung tree, whose oil was used for the caulking, oiling and varnishing of junks and sampans.
Yichang
Situated at the eastern mouth of the Xiling Gorge, Yichang is the economic and cultural center of the western Hubei Province. Its history can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms Period, as early as 278 B.C. and it was once a key strategic place scrabbled in battles between the Shu and the Wu kingdoms.
Zhang Fei Temple
Zhang Fei Temple was built to commemorate General Zhang Fei - one of the three sworn blood brothers of the state of Shu during the Three Kingdoms Period, (the other two were Liu Bei and Guan Yu). The Temple is a famous historical site along the Yangtze River.
Zigui County
Located at the exit of Xiling Gorge, Zigui is the hometown of Qu Yuan, one of China's greatly loved patriotic poets of the State of Chu in the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).The walled city, shaped like a gourd hence the name "Gourd City" features with traditional Chinese style architecture.
