    History & Significance

  • Originally an imperial island-palace during the Jin Dynasty (1115–1234), Tuancheng Fortress took its current circular fortress form under Ming Emperor Yongle in 1420. It served as a military watchtower protecting the Forbidden City’s western flank and later became an imperial garden retreat. The fortress walls, built with layered bricks and mortar, create its legendary acoustic phenomenon.

      Main Architectural Structures

    • Chengguang Hall

      The most prominent building in Tuancheng, Chengguang Hall is a magnificent hall with a double-eaved roof covered in yellow glazed tiles, a symbol of imperial power. Inside, there is a 1.5-meter-tall white jade Buddha statue, carved from a single piece of jade, which is a masterpiece of Buddhist art from the Qing Dynasty.

      Yuancheng Pavilion

      Located on the eastern side of Tuancheng, this pavilion offers panoramic views of Beihai Park and the surrounding area. Its unique circular design complements the overall layout of Tuancheng.

      ncient Trees

      Tuancheng Fortress is home to several ancient trees, some of which are over 800 years old. The most famous one is a pine tree known as the "Jade Emperor Pine," which is said to have been planted during the Yuan Dynasty. It is revered for its graceful shape and historical significance.

      Wells and Water Features

      There are two ancient wells in Tuancheng, known as "Jade Spring Well" and "Sweet Water Well." These wells provided water for the residents of the fortress in ancient times and are still preserved today.

    • Cultural Heritage Protection Tuancheng Fortress is a key cultural relics protection unit in China, and all visitors are required to abide by the regulations to protect the historical sites. Climbing on the buildings, touching the cultural relics, or damaging the ancient trees is strictly prohibited.
      Photography Restrictions While photography is allowed in most areas of Tuancheng Fortress, the use of flash is prohibited inside Chengguang Hall to protect the jade Buddha statue and other precious artifacts.
      Accessibility The entrance to Tuancheng is via the south gate of Beihai Park. There are some steps and uneven paths within the fortress, so visitors with mobility issues are advised to take caution or seek assistance.
