- History
- The area where the Beijing 798 Art Zone is located was once North China Wireless Joint Equipment Factory, also known as the 718 Joint Factory. The factory was designed and built by German experts. It has a typical Bauhaus style, a model of the perfect combination of practicality and simplicity. After the completion of the 718 Joint Factory, it has made outstanding contributions to the country's economic construction, especially the construction of the electronics industry, the construction of national defense, and the development of the communications industry.
In 1964, the 718 Joint Factory was recast as 706 Factory, 707 Factory, 718 Factory, 797 Factory, 798 Factory and 751 Factory, which was restructured as Beijing Seven-Star Science and Technology Co., LTD in December of 2000. Some unused workshops were rent by artists from around and outside Beijing. Attracted by the unique architectural style and convenient traffic, more and more art organizations and artists gathered here. They made full use of the style of the original factory buildings and transformed them into art galleries, art studios, and fashion stores. Because the artists first rent the 789 Factory, so the district was named 798 Art Zone.
In 2003, 798 Art Zone was ranked as “one of the top 22 most culturally symbolic urban art centers in the world” by American Time Magazine.
